Program Goals
Our goals for the children in our care are consistent with the Ministry of Education pedagogy, support the following foundations and apply to every child, regardless of age, gender, developmental ability, culture, language, geography, or setting:
To promote the health, safety, nutrition and well-being of the children
To support positive and responsive interactions among the children, parents, and staff
To encourage the children to interact and communicate in a positive way and support their ability to self-regulate
To foster the children’s exploration, play and inquiry
To provide child-initiated and adult-supported experiences
To plan for and create positive learning environments and experiences in which each child’s learning and development will be supported
To incorporate indoor & outdoor play, active play and rest/quiet time into each day while being mindful of each child’s individual needs
To foster the engagement of open & ongoing communication with parents about their children and the program
To involve local community partners and allow those partners to support the children, their families and staff
To support staff with continuous professional learning opportunities
To document and review the impact of the strategies set out in the above on the children and their families
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum/program is based on the ideas & interests of the children in our care formulated from classroom & individual observations recorded by staff & fostered by open communication with the children in our care, their families and other staff members. By taking into account the children’s personal interests/inquiries when planning curriculum/programs it allows staff to directly address the children’s curiosity and enables the children to be active contributors to their own learning.
Each playroom is set up to promote exploration, investigation & interaction by offering a wide arrangement of equipment, toys and books in a child-friendly atmosphere. Materials available are selected to allow for child-initiated play & discovery with adult support when needed. By assuming children are capable, competent, curious & rich in potential we approach curriculum as the ability to provide opportunities for children to make active inquiries, take risks and explore as they lead the way in their own learning. Materials available reflect weekly program plans, the children’s abilities and provide a variety of learning experiences/opportunities which include; language & literature, sensory & science, cognitive exploration, math & manipulation, fine motor development, imaginary play & gross motor activities. Weekly plans are posted outside of each playroom & provide details of the variety of activities that will be available each day. These activities cite the E.L.E.C.T. (Early Learning for Every Child Today) document indicating what developmental domain & skill will be supported with each activity’s implementation. Copies of the E.L.E.C.T. document are available for every parent’s perusal above the children’s cubbies.
Timothy Eaton Infant & Toddler Centre is dedicated to implementing a curriculum/program that promotes development, is reflective of current Early Childhood Education trends and most importantly allows every child in our care to feel safe, have a sense of belonging and have fun!!
